It hardly bears mentioning that black and white are a classic color combination, but this duo has stood the test of time in home decor for good reason: it’s clean, it’s modern, and, quite conveniently, it prevents you from having to worry about matching.
The problem with black and white, though, is that it can often look a bit stark. As a result, designers working with this palette are always looking for ways to warm things up a bit without straying too far from the original color scheme.
I always find myself coming back to black and white when thinking about updates to Matt’s and my living room. The challenge, though, is finding examples of black-and-white living rooms that feel put together and sophisticated without looking like designer showrooms.
So what’s the solution? Here are six spaces in which the black-and-white color scheme is tempered by other elements—a fun pattern here, a bit of nature there—to keep them feeling exactly the way they’re supposed to: livable.
Inspired by these examples, I’ve put together some ideas for a black-and-white living room warmed up with gold accents. See below for a few things I wouldn’t mind adding to the mix in my own space but that I think would work in a variety of homes.
